Cook Leader

INTRODUCTION: This position is located within Employee Food Services, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton, Washington. The purpose of this position is to lead cooks in the preparation and performance of a wide variety of simple cooking tasks.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Grills steaks, chops, poultry, pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, etc. Watches while the food items are cooking, turning as appropriate. Prepares various gravies, sauces from stock, soups, casseroles, and entrees based on specific recipes while modifying to obtain required portions. Guards against waste. In collaboration with the Food Service Manager, will assist/lead with caters. Performs other related duties as assigned. Receives oral and written instructions from the Food Service Manager or Food Service Management staff. Provides guidance to NA-5 Cooks, assisting and directing in the absence of specific instructions, and/or in the absence of the Food Service Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to lead others in assigned tasks. Knowledge of safety in operation and cleaning food service equipment, characteristics of various foods, and the ability to season food and decide when food is done.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequently lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds, constant standing and walking, and occasionally lifting over 50 pounds. Works in warm and noisy kitchen. Exposed to steam, fumes, and odors. Danger of falling, burns, and cuts. Exposed to extreme temperatures when entering walk-in refrigeratiors.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Successful completion of National Agency (NACI) background check required. Physical exertion is involved in standing and walking for long periods, some bending, stooping and lifting is required. Work is normally performed inside with adequate light, heat and fresh air.
