Work and Family Life Consultant

Location: Naval Station Everett - Fleet & Family Support

Pay Grade: NF-0101-04

Brief Description of Duties:  This position is located in the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC). The primary purpose of this position is to plan, implement, administer, and counsel on the FFSC programs concerning work and family life issues including information and referral (I&R), and follow-up services to military members, retirees, and family members. Incumbent serves as a non-clinical consultant on a wide variety of work and family life issues and concerns.Interviews, assesses clients’ needs and concerns, such as relocation, career resource development, and personal financial issues. Evaluates and interprets data received from interviews. Identifies and clarifies issues/concerns and determines appropriate referrals either within FFSC or civilian/military community. Assists clients in prioritizing issues and developing plans andgoals that are tailored to specific needs and concerns. Provides advice, guidance and additional referral options to clients. Monitors and tracks each case to evaluate and ensure customer service and client satisfaction. Periodically reviews cases with supervisor, recommending and carrying out appropriate actions to resolve concerns. Incumbent may be required to serve as non-clinical consultant and instructor in one or more of the following specialty areas: Career Resource Development, Relocation Services, Personal Financial Management, and Command Representative and Marketing.

Qualifications Required: 

  • Financial Counselors must possess a baccalaureate degree from accredited college or a combination of education and experiences. Must possess and maintain a nationally recognized financial counselor certification.
  • Other positions require Associate’s degree or higher in education, social/behavioral, business administration, finance, economics, travel and tourism, marketing or related field. Experience providing adult education and/or work/family life consultation is preferred but not required.
  • Skill in conducting interviews to establish the nature and extent of issues, in order to determine appropriate referral services and options.
  • Skill in preparation of presentations and public speaking in personal – large and small group settings.
    Effective skill in forming and retaining working relationships with peers and leadership. Skill in using various computer software database, spreadsheet, word processing and network programs (e.g. as Internet, Microsoft Office Suite and FFSP databases. Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Conditions of Employment: Satisfactorily complete a formal background check and maintain security suitability requirements. Regular and recurring work performed sitting at a desk and sitting in conferences and meetings. Must successfully obtain complete state/national accreditation, in at least one field (e.g. Certified Financial Counselor/Planner, Associate Certified Life Coach, state teaching certificate etc) within 3 years of employment. May require some travel to different offices, military and civilian. Hours may vary according to client needs. Must be able to traverse ladders, passage ways and other structural aspects on board Navy vessels. Maintain a Passport. Standing while facilitating groups/classes. Maybe required to carry objects or projector weighing twenty-five pounds or less. To ensure compliance with an applicable preliminary nationwide injunction, which may be supplemented, modified, or vacated, depending on the course of ongoing litigation, the Federal Government will take no action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement pursuant to Executive Order 14043 on Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees.
